Dear Barbie,
What are some good places to get away for Memorial Day weekend? Keep in mind I am a college student—there isn’t a lot of money to spare! I’d like to go away for the weekend with about 4 people and somewhere close by, and a lot of fun! Hope you have some good ideas for me!
Sincerely,
“Vacation-bound”

Dear “Vacation-bound,”
Gosh, is it really Memorial Day weekend already!? Spring quarter has sure blown by. Living in Washington you can never really tell what the weather is going to be like (especially lately), but a little rain can’t harm us! Try something outdoors, like camping or getting a cabin in the San Juan Islands (my preference would be Roche Harbor), but Friday Harbor is very fun as well. The San Juan Islands will definitely be a little pricier, so you may want to even bring six friends to split the cost—but might I say, it is definitely worth the price! And be prepared for long ferry lines; bring snacks and a good selection of your favorite music. Another option would be taking a little road trip to Eastern Washington, staying in either Soap Lake or Lake Chelan. You can find some relatively cheap places there or even camp (bring a tent though)!
Check out these information sites:
San Juan’s: http://www.outdoorodysseys.com/camping.html
Soap Lake: http://www.soaplakewa.com/
Lake Chelan: http://www.lakechelan.org/736.html
Enjoy your weekend and hope these helped!
XO,
Barbie

Great ideas for a long weekend! For those short on cash and wishing to try a ‘stay-cation’ may I suggest that you visit SAM. The downtown museum, the Asian art museum, and the sculpture park on the waterfront. Good fun on a budget. Use the money you save on gas to buy a great lunch or dinner.

Great suggestions for a weekend getaway! Lake Chelan is one of my favorite spots in the State. For those looking for a less expensive alternative may I suggest that you visit SAM. Make it a ‘stay-cation’ by checking out three Seattle treasures. The downtown Seattle Art Museum, now featuring Andy Warhol and Kurt Cobain; the SAM sculpture park on the Seattle waterfront, new inside and outside installations this week; the SAM Asian Art museum at Volunteer Park, great Asian inspired art and like all three museums the price is a donation. Then spend your money on a great lunch and dinner.
